Meanwhile, some Singaporeans have also been trying to profit off these vouchers.

The Federation of Merchants’ Associations, Singapore (FMAS) has pointed out that the benefits of the Community Development Council (CDC) voucher scheme are not evenly distributed among merchants. Businesses in high-traffic areas with strong digital presence are benefiting the most, while heartland enterprises are facing challenges in staying competitive.

FMAS president Yeo Hiang Meng mentioned that the vouchers have been effective in driving footfall to local businesses, but the impact varies based on the location and digital proficiency of the merchants. Those in quieter areas or with limited digital engagement are experiencing a more modest impact.

Merchants who actively promote their participation in the CDC voucher scheme through social media or clear signage are attracting more customers compared to those who are less digitally savvy. Mr Yeo also highlighted that older hawkers and shopkeepers may struggle with digital outreach, affecting their visibility and reach.

Singaporean households can claim and use S$500 (US$380) in CDC vouchers from May 13, with the vouchers valid until Dec 31 this year. The aim of these vouchers is to assist households in managing cost-of-living challenges.
