When summer arrives, many envision sunny days, vacations, and warm evenings. However, for individuals dealing with arthritis, the rising temperatures can lead to painful flare-ups. While cold weather is often linked to joint stiffness, heat and humidity can also exacerbate symptoms, causing swelling, fatigue, and increased pain.

We spoke with Matt Daly, a member of the Musculoskeletal Association of Chartered Physiotherapists, who explained the science behind heat-related flare-ups and shared practical tips to help manage symptoms during the summer months.

Factors that May Worsen Arthritis Symptoms in Summer

Daly mentioned that the impact of weather on arthritis symptoms varies depending on the type of arthritis. For individuals with rheumatoid arthritis, increased temperatures can trigger sensitivity due to the immune system's response to inflammation. On the other hand, those with osteoarthritis may experience increased stiffness in their hands due to weather changes like humidity or barometric pressure.

Dehydration could also play a role in affecting synovial fluid production. Research suggests that staying hydrated can help support and hydrate the synovial fluid, potentially reducing joint stiffness and sensitivity.

Tips for Managing Arthritis Flare-Ups in Hot Weather

  • Have a period of relative rest: Reduce activities that worsen pain and stiffness.
  • Try anti-inflammatories: Consider using NSAIDs or topical anti-inflammatory creams.
  • Put the affected area in cool water: Cooling the hands or body in water can provide relief.
  • Stay in the shade: Avoid direct sunlight to prevent heat, fatigue, and dehydration.
  • Wear lighter clothing: Opt for breathable fabrics like cotton to stay cool.
  • Stay hydrated: Drink cool water throughout the day to maintain hydration.
  • Listen to your body: Pay attention to any changes in symptoms and seek professional help if needed.

By following these tips, individuals can better manage arthritis flare-ups during the summer and enjoy the season to the fullest.
