Following decades of falling agonisingly short of success, South Africa is on the cusp of a first major cricket triumph with 69 runs needed to win the world Test championship on day four at Lord’s on Saturday. Don’t miss a moment of the action.

Steve Smith is facing a tight race to recover in time for the West Indies tour after suffering a severe dislocated finger that required hospital treatment. The Australian vice-captain's finger was put back in place and stitched up, but he will need to test it out soon to determine if he can still participate in the upcoming matches.

The compound dislocation of Smith's right little finger left him in considerable pain and discomfort, almost causing him to vomit on the field. Although surgery was not necessary, the injury required extensive medical attention as the bone had pierced through the skin.

Following treatment at the hospital, Smith's finger was cleaned, disinfected, stitched, and immobilized in a splint, which he will have to wear for approximately two months. While the wound is expected to heal in a couple of weeks, Smith may still be able to bat with the splint on, depending on his tolerance level.

Prior to the injury, Smith had plans to participate in the Major League Cricket Twenty20 tournament with Washington Freedom before the West Indies tour commences on June 25. His availability for the matches will depend on how well he recovers from this setback.
