A unique black iceberg has been discovered off the coast of Labrador, Canada, stunning both scientists and social media users. The iceberg, with its dark hue, was first spotted by a fisherman named Hallur Antoniussen while working on his shrimp trawler Saputi. The iceberg's pitch-black color and diamond shape stood out among the white and blue ice chunks in the area, capturing Antoniussen's attention.

Most icebergs appear white due to the presence of air bubbles in the ice that scatter light. However, when ice is compressed over time, it becomes clearer and can lose its air bubbles, resulting in a glassy appearance. Dark icebergs are rare and often indicate contamination, such as soil or pebbles, that get trapped in the ice as glaciers move over land.

Glaciologist Lev Tarasov from Memorial University explained that this particular black iceberg likely originated from a glacier near Greenland. As it traveled south through Baffin Bay and along the Labrador coast, it melted gradually, revealing the dark, sediment-rich layers. Tarasov mentioned that most of the iceberg is submerged underwater, with only a small portion visible above the surface.

When Antoniussen shared the image online, it quickly went viral, sparking international interest and speculation. Social media users expressed amazement at the rare sight, with many noting that it was their first time seeing a black iceberg. Some even proposed theories, such as the possibility of a boulder resting on top of the ice, contributing to its dark color.
