As the new school year kicks off, teacher organizations are raising concerns about the ongoing education crisis in the country, highlighting severe shortages in classrooms, educators, and learning materials. The Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) and the Teachers' Dignity Coalition (TDC) are calling for a significant increase in the education budget and immediate reforms to address these pressing issues.

ACT Chairperson Vladimer Quetua emphasized the need for urgent action, pointing out the alarming deficits in classrooms, teachers, education support personnel, and learning materials. The groups are demanding a doubling of the education budget to at least six percent of the GDP to meet international standards and ensure quality education for all students.

ACT criticized the current administration's neglect of public education, attributing the crisis to a lack of resources and a focus on military spending and debt servicing. TDC echoed these sentiments, highlighting the challenges faced by teachers and students due to persistent shortages in essential resources.

Both organizations stressed the importance of addressing teacher welfare issues, including low pay, overwork, and the under-implementation of benefits. While some progress has been made, such as the institutionalization of a medical allowance, more support is needed to improve working conditions and ensure the effective implementation of the curriculum.

As the new school year begins, ACT has launched a School Opening Campaign to advocate for increased funding and reforms. The groups are committed to pushing for better salaries, improved working conditions, and a more inclusive education system that prioritizes the well-being of teachers and students.
