Airbus SE has been sounding out customers appetite for a longer version of its A220-300 jet that would give airlines more seating capacity but at the expense of range.

Airbus SE has been gauging customer interest in a longer version of its A220-300 jet to increase seating capacity at the expense of range. The potential A220-500 has come into focus ahead of the Paris Air Show, with Airbus aiming to secure new deals, including a possible order from AirAsia for up to 100 units.

The European aircraft manufacturer has long hinted at developing a larger variant of the A220 to compete with Boeing Co.'s 737 Max and offer a modern alternative to its smaller A320 family. This move could help revitalize demand for the A220, which has seen a decline in orders and remains unprofitable.

Despite facing challenges like a shrinking backlog and lack of new orders, Airbus is considering a straightforward stretch version of the A220-300 that would share the same wing and engine. While this could limit the jet's range, it would enhance capacity and simplify the development process, potentially attracting more customers.

Although the final decision on the new variant is pending, Airbus is committed to investing in the A220 platform and exploring all possibilities. The company inherited plans for a third A220 model from Bombardier Inc. in 2018 and is now evaluating options to expand its narrowbody offerings in a market dominated by existing models.

By extending the fuselage of the A220-300, Airbus could introduce a more versatile aircraft that meets the needs of various airlines. While some carriers may prefer a longer-range option, others, like Air France-KLM, could benefit from a simpler, more cost-effective design.
