India has initiated 'Operation Sindhu' to evacuate Indian citizens from Iran amidst escalating tensions of potential Israeli-American military strikes on the country. The first group of 100 students is returning to Delhi from Armenia early Thursday morning.
As the evacuation process begins, the Iranian embassy reported that some Indian students suffered injuries in an attack. The Ministry of External Affairs stated that the Indian government has been closely monitoring the situation and taking necessary steps to ensure the safety of its citizens in Iran.
The government expressed gratitude to Iran and Armenia for their cooperation in facilitating the evacuation process. The Indian Embassy in Iran is assisting Indian nationals in moving to safer areas within the country and subsequently evacuating them using available options.
More than 4,000 Indian nationals, including around 2,000 students, are currently residing in Iran. In light of the escalating tensions, India had advised its citizens to leave Tehran earlier this week.
As India prepares to evacuate its citizens from the conflict zone, it faces diplomatic challenges due to its relationships with Iran's neighboring countries. While India has amicable ties with Armenia, Turkmenistan, and Iraq, it lacks formal diplomatic relations with Afghanistan and has strained relations with Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Pakistan.
Delhi is utilizing its diplomatic relationships to ensure the safe return of its citizens, considering various evacuation routes including the Persian Gulf, Turkmenistan, and Iraq.
