Drogheda United co-chairman Ben Boycott has claimed the Co Louth club have been made an "example of" by UEFA after their expulsion from this season's Conference League.

Drogheda United co-chairman Ben Boycott has expressed his views on the club's expulsion from this season's Conference League by UEFA, stating that they have been made an 'example of'.

Following their qualification for Europe after winning the FAI Cup last November, the Trivela Group-owned Drogs have faced a challenging period.

Due to UEFA's multi-club ownership rules, only one of the teams under the Trivela umbrella could enter the tournament. Danish side Silkeborg secured the spot in the Conference League based on their higher league finish.

Despite Drogheda's appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport being unsuccessful, Boycott, in an open letter to the club's supporters, emphasized the lack of consistency, clarity, and fairness in the process.

He assured that the ownership will cover the financial loss from missing out on European games, which would have generated at least €525,000.

Boycott explained the complexities of the situation, highlighting the challenges faced by Trivela in separating from Drogheda United amidst major off-field transitions for the club.

He criticized the limited communication around significant rule changes, stating that larger clubs had more information and opportunities to make the necessary adjustments to their ownership structures.

Boycott acknowledged Trivela's responsibility for the situation but expressed frustration at the process, believing that Drogheda was being used as an example by UEFA to signal a change in their regulation of multi-club ownerships.

On a positive note, Boycott shared plans for a new stadium, indicating a bright future for the club.
