Beat Saber is ending support for PS4 and PS5, highlighting how little Sony's VR efforts have been supported.

Beat Saber is discontinuing support for PS4 and PS5, shedding light on the lack of backing Sony's VR efforts have received.

Starting this month, no more updates will be released, meaning no new songs or music packs. However, the game will still be downloadable and playable, and any previously released extra content can still be purchased and enjoyed. Cross-buy functionality between PS4 and PS5 will also continue.

Furthermore, multiplayer will no longer be accessible on either PlayStation console as of January 21, 2026.

The VR rhythm game will still be accessible on other platforms such as Steam and Meta Quest.

Previously, in November 2024, Beat Games halted support for Meta Quest 1 devices due to their obsolescence. It appears that the studio now considers PlayStation VR devices in a similar vein.

A statement on the Beat Saber FAQ reads: "As we look towards the future and plan the next major step for Beat Saber, we have decided to cease releasing updates for PS4 and PS5 starting in June 2025. Our dedication to VR remains steadfast. We are enthusiastic about the potential ahead and what we can offer to Beat Saber fans who have been on this journey with us for the past seven years."

Consequently, the final song to be added to Beat Saber on PlayStation will be Lady Gaga's "Abracadabra." Will it be death or love tonight? It appears to be the former.

Although Sony's PSVR2 was lauded as a top-notch piece of hardware upon its launch in 2023, the company has faced widespread criticism for its lack of support for the platform.

Eurogamer's VR expert Ian Higton wrote last year: "It's challenging to maintain enthusiasm for the PlayStation VR2 when even Astro Bot refuses to wear one." Synapse was arguably the last noteworthy PSVR2 exclusive, created and published by nDreams and featuring David Hayter and Jennifer Hale.

The price of PSVR2 was reduced in February of this year, dropping from £530 to £400.

However, justifying that price is difficult when there are so few games available. During its most recent State of Play event, Sony unveiled only one PSVR2 game: Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow. Even this title will be released on various other platforms.

Beat Saber is likely the standout VR application, a fantastic rhythm game where players must slice colored boxes in time with songs. It has expanded significantly since its launch, incorporating music packs from various popular artists like Daft Punk, The Weeknd, Ariana Grande, and more.
