China's Response to US Military Action in Iran: A Strategic Analysis

With limited leverage, Beijing may choose a muted response but will protect its economic interests in region, analysts say.

When it comes to the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran, China is expected to take a cautious approach, even if the US decides to engage militarily. Analysts believe that this situation could have both positive and negative outcomes for Beijing.

There has been increasing speculation about potential US intervention since Israel conducted its most intense strikes on Iran in decades last Friday. In response, the US has deployed an aircraft carrier from the South China Sea and sent a significant number of fighter and tanker aircraft to the Middle East.

President Donald Trump is reportedly contemplating military action to target Iran's nuclear facilities. He recently called for the "unconditional surrender" of Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, referring to him as an "easy target".

China's foreign ministry expressed "serious concerns" about the escalating conflict on Wednesday and called on countries with influence over Israel – likely referring to the US – to play a constructive role in de-escalating tensions.

The ministry's spokesman, Guo Jiakun, stated that China opposes any actions that violate the UN Charter's principles and infringe on other countries' sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity. He emphasized that further escalation in the Middle East would not benefit any party involved.

Given its close relationship with Tehran, Beijing has also expressed its willingness to mediate peace talks between Iran and Israel.
