Palestinian rights activist Mahmoud Khalil says he will continue to protest against what he calls US government-funded genocide in Gaza.

Mahmoud Khalil, a Palestinian rights activist, has vowed to persist in his advocacy against what he perceives as US government-funded atrocities in Gaza.

Following his release from immigration detention, Khalil criticized the Trump administration for attempting to dehumanize dissenting voices. He accused both the Trump administration and Columbia University of complicity in Israel's actions in Gaza.

Despite facing threats of detention or worse, Khalil remains resolute in his commitment to advocating for Palestinian rights. He expressed a desire to return to his previous work, emphasizing the importance of celebrating free speech rather than punishing it.

Upon his release, Khalil was reunited with his wife, Noor Abdalla, a US citizen, at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey. He was greeted by supporters, including US Democratic congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Deportation Threat Looms

The US government still intends to deport Khalil, a permanent US resident, citing his activism as detrimental to American foreign policy interests. Khalil, a recent graduate of Columbia University, was a prominent figure in the pro-Palestinian student protest movement last year.

Despite being a lawful permanent resident, Secretary of State Marco Rubio invoked an obscure part of federal immigration law to justify Khalil's deportation, along with other foreign pro-Palestinian students. Critics argue that this move wrongfully equates criticism of the Israeli government with antisemitism.

US District Judge Michael Farbiarz ruled in Khalil's favor, stating that the government's actions violated his constitutional right to free speech. He ordered Khalil's release on bail while he continues to challenge deportation efforts and a lawsuit alleging wrongful detention.

Legal Battles Ahead

While the Trump administration has appealed Judge Farbiarz's rulings, Khalil will contest a deportation order issued by an immigration court in Louisiana. He plans to challenge this decision through the Board of Immigration Appeals, which is under the Department of Justice.

Despite facing ongoing legal challenges, Khalil remains steadfast in his commitment to advocating for Palestinian rights and free speech.
