TWO dengue-related deaths have been recorded in Mandaue City from Jan. 1 to May 25, 2025, compared to just one fatality during the same period last year.

The victims were a five-year-old child from Barangay Centro and a 15-year-old teenager from Barangay Canduman, according to the Mandaue City Health Office (MCHO).

Dr. Frenzy Antonette Tadle, MCHO medical coordinator for dengue prevention and control, reported a total of 257 dengue cases so far this year — up from 231 cases logged during the same timeframe in 2024.

Top Barangays with Dengue Cases

  • Canduman: 24 cases
  • Jagobiao: 20 cases
  • Maguikay: 15 cases
  • Tabok: 14 cases
  • Banilad: 14 cases

Tadle emphasized that dengue is no longer just a seasonal threat.

“Dengue is now a year-round concern, not just during the rainy season. This year was identified as a potential outbreak year; but fortunately, Mandaue currently has the lowest number of dengue cases among highly urbanized cities (HUCs) in Cebu,” said Tadle.

Dengue Awareness Initiatives

In line with Dengue Awareness Month this month of June, the MCHO launched an information caravan across all barangays to raise public awareness.

The office also trained barangay midwives to help educate and mobilize communities in the fight against dengue.

To strengthen prevention efforts, the MCHO activated dengue brigades in every barangay that conduct regular cleanup drives, household inspections and public information campaigns.

The City is also implementing the Department of Health’s “4S strategy” to combat dengue.

This includes:

  • Searching for and destroying mosquito breeding sites
  • Securing self-protection through the use of repellents and protective clothing
  • Seeking early consultation when symptoms such as high fever, rash, or joint pain appear
  • Supporting fogging and spraying activities in identified hotspot areas

Tadle urged residents to remain vigilant, especially as the rainy season begins.

“Inspect your homes and surroundings regularly, eliminate stagnant water and don’t ignore early symptoms. Early intervention saves lives,” she said. / CAV
