Habibur Masum, 26, is accused of murdering Kulsuma Akter, 27, after tracking her down to a women’s refuge

A man is facing charges for fatally stabbing his estranged wife in Bradford while she was out with their baby, the court has disclosed. Habibur Masum, 26, allegedly murdered Kulsuma Akter, 27, after locating her at a women's refuge.

The court heard that Masum viciously attacked Akter by stabbing her multiple times in the head, neck, and body while she was pushing a pram in Bradford. Akter had moved to the refuge to escape threats and assaults from Masum at their Oldham home.

Masum, who admitted to manslaughter but denied murder, is accused of stalking, threatening, and assaulting Akter over several months before fatally stabbing her outside a shop on April 6 last year.

Prosecutor Stephen Wood KC stated that Akter, with their seven-month-old baby, was near the refuge when Masum approached her. The CCTV footage presented in court showed Masum attacking Akter with a knife as she fell to the ground, while the pram rolled away.

During the trial, it was revealed that Masum was calculated in his actions, even going as far as changing his appearance and fleeing after the attack. He was eventually apprehended outside a hospital in Buckinghamshire.

Witnesses testified that Masum had previously threatened to harm Akter and her brothers, with one incident in November 2023 involving a knife being held to her throat. Despite Masum's claims of losing control, the prosecution argued that these were excuses for his actions.

Despite denying the charges, Masum is currently on trial for stalking, attacking, and killing Akter. The court proceedings are ongoing.
