The Railway Ministry has now mandated automatic door‑closure systems in all new local train rakes manufactured for the Mumbai suburban network.

Tragedy struck as four passengers lost their lives and two others sustained serious injuries after falling from a crowded local train near Thane in Maharashtra. The unfortunate incident took place between Diva and Kopar railway stations while the train was en route to Kasara during peak hours.

Due to the overcrowding, many passengers were standing near the doors of the moving train, leading to at least 10 individuals falling off. The deceased included a 34-year-old railway police officer named Vikky Babasaheb, along with Rahul Gupta (28), Ketan Saroj (23), and Mayur Shah (50).

The incident occurred at 9:30 am in Diva, Thane, with the victims standing on the foot-over of the train doors. The passengers who lost their lives were between 30 and 35 years old.

According to Swapnil Dhanraj Nila, CPRO of Central Railway, the tragic event was not a collision but likely a result of passengers on footboards of trains moving in opposite directions getting entangled. The slight tilt that occurs on curves may have also contributed to the incident, as per initial investigations.
