A runaway pet zebra that had been loose for more than a week in Tennessee was captured on Sunday, becoming an internet sensation in the process, according to authorities.

Ed the zebra was safely captured after being found in a pasture near a subdivision in the Christiana community in central Tennessee, as confirmed by the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office. Aviation crews were responsible for capturing the zebra.

"Ed was airlifted and flown by helicopter back to a waiting animal trailer," the sheriff’s office stated.

Video shared by the sheriff’s office shows Ed being carried by the helicopter in a net with his head sticking out as he is transported to the trailer.

Ed arrived in Christiana on May 30, with his owner reporting him missing the following day. The zebra was seen running along Interstate 24 and eventually escaped into a wooded area, causing deputies to close the roadway.

There were multiple sightings of Ed posted on social media, including footage of him trotting through a neighborhood. The zebra quickly gained popularity as the subject of internet memes, with fake posts showing him at various locations in Tennessee.

The capture of Ed occurred shortly after a kangaroo caused a section of an Alabama interstate to be shut down.
