Many farmers often ignore their own health

Diabetes Ireland, in collaboration with Xpert Workwear, has launched an initiative to educate farmers about Type 2 diabetes, its symptoms, and risk factors. Farmers, who often prioritize their work over their health, are at a higher risk of developing this chronic condition.

Type 2 diabetes is a condition that is frequently misdiagnosed or undiagnosed, as its symptoms can be subtle. Individuals with a family history of Type 2 diabetes or who are overweight or obese are at a greater risk of developing this condition. Early detection and intervention can lead to better health outcomes and reduce the risk of serious complications affecting various organs.

Approximately 270,000 people in Ireland are living with Type 2 diabetes, with many more unaware that they have the condition or prediabetes. The campaign aims to raise awareness among farmers about the risk factors and symptoms of Type 2 diabetes, encouraging them to take proactive steps by consulting their GP for a blood glucose test if they identify multiple risk factors.

Reuben Quinn, Sales Director at Xpert Workwear, shared his personal experience of living with Type 1 diabetes and emphasized the importance of preventing Type 2 diabetes through lifestyle changes. He highlighted the impact of diabetes on individuals and families and expressed his belief that the campaign could help prevent the onset of Type 2 diabetes in others.
