JAKARTA: Indonesia revoked permits on Tuesday (Jun 10) for four of the five mining companies operating in the eastern archipelago of Raja Ampat after activists shared videos of islands damaged

Indonesia made a significant move by revoking permits for four out of five mining companies operating in Raja Ampat, an eastern archipelago, after activists raised concerns about the damage caused by nickel extraction. Raja Ampat, known for its pristine reefs and clear blue waters, is a popular diving destination located in Southwest Papua Province within the Coral Triangle.

Greenpeace Indonesia recently shared videos exposing nickel mining projects on three islands in Raja Ampat, with one video garnering over 15 million views on Instagram. Following this outcry, President Prabowo Subianto decided to revoke the mining licenses of four companies in the region, according to state secretariat minister Prasetyo Hadi.

Energy and mineral resources minister Bahlil Lahadalia emphasized that the companies had violated regulations, leading to the decision to protect the region. Greenpeace reported that nickel exploitation on Gag, Kawe, and Manuran islands had already destroyed more than 500 hectares of forest and vegetation, prompting calls for immediate action from various stakeholders.

The four companies affected by the permit revocation are PT Anugerah Surya Pratama, PT Nurham, PT Kawei Sejahtera Mining, and PT Mulia Raymond Perkasa. While PT Nurham had recently received its mining permits and not commenced production, the other three had been operating since 2013. Another company, PT Gag Nikel, will be allowed to continue operations on Gag island under close monitoring, as it received its permit in 2017.

Indonesia, being the world's largest nickel reserves holder and top producer of the metal, plays a significant role in the global nickel market. Greenpeace Indonesia welcomed the government's decision but stressed the importance of ensuring its implementation and preventing any potential permit reissuance or legal challenges from the affected companies.

Forest campaign team leader Arie Rompas urged for further actions to safeguard Raja Ampat's environment and biodiversity. He cautioned that vigilance was necessary to prevent any future harm to the region from mining activities.
