The family of a vulnerable resident featured in a recent RTÉ Investigates documentary on care standards at private nursing homes in Ireland is calling for accountability for their father and others affected by the scandal.
The Guy family from Dublin expressed shock and distress after seeing footage of their father Audeon being mistreated at the Beneavin Manor nursing home in Glasnevin. They emphasized the importance of dignity and proper care for all residents.
Concerned about what they witnessed, the Guy family began making complaints to the management at the nursing home. The documentary highlighted care failings at two facilities, Beneavin Manor and The Residence Portlaoise, both operated by Emeis Ireland.
The family shared that Audeon, an 80-year-old diagnosed with Lewy body dementia, was a kind and loving individual who deserved better treatment. Despite choosing Beneavin Manor based on positive reports from the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA), they soon noticed issues with his care.
Complaints about inadequate staffing, residents left unsupervised, and poor personal care prompted the family to take action. While management assured corrective measures were in place, further distressing footage was captured by an undercover carer.
The family's call for accountability and urgent enactment of the Adult Safeguarding Bill aims to prevent similar incidents in the future. They emphasize the need for improved oversight and transparency in the care home sector.
As they search for a new home for Audeon, the family questions the reliability of regulatory reports and stresses the importance of trust in ensuring the well-being of vulnerable residents.
