The Madleen is no ‘selfie yacht’. It is a symbol of human compassion in a world that has decided to look away, says Guardian columnist Owen Jones

When faced with the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, Greta Thunberg and activists attempted to deliver aid on the Madleen, highlighting the starvation crisis looming over the region. However, Israeli soldiers intercepted the ship, showcasing the challenges faced by those trying to help.

Israel's response to the aid mission has been dismissive, labeling the Madleen as a 'selfie yacht' and downplaying the efforts of activists. The blockade on Gaza has been in place for nearly two decades, causing severe food insecurity and a dire humanitarian situation.

Despite warnings and evidence of intentional starvation tactics by Israel, Western governments have turned a blind eye to the suffering in Gaza. Reports of aid being deliberately blocked and humanitarian assistance being hindered have not led to any significant action or sanctions against Israel.

The situation in Gaza has been described as genocidal, with Israel's actions leading to the destruction of infrastructure, agricultural land, and livelihoods. The replacement of humanitarian agencies with entities like the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation has only exacerbated the crisis, leading to further suffering for the Palestinian population.

While the Madleen did not reach Gaza, the mission has shed light on the ongoing atrocities and complicity of Western governments in the region. The actions of activists like Greta Thunberg serve as a reminder of the importance of standing up against injustice and holding those responsible to account.
