Western Australia has taken the lead in the country when it comes to the number of big batteries either planned or already in operation. According to a recent report by the Climate Council titled Battery Boom: Supercharging Australia’s Renewable Rollout, WA currently has eight big batteries either in service or in the commissioning stage.

Among these, two of the largest batteries in Australia are being installed in Collie and are expected to start operating later this year. This development is part of the WA government's efforts to shut down its last two state-owned coal-fired power plants by 2029.

The report also highlights a significant 20% decrease in the upfront cost of big batteries last year. Additionally, there are over 20 gigawatts of big battery storage in the national pipeline, nearly double the amount that was planned just a year ago.

In terms of household battery uptake, the report suggests that adding two million household batteries could save Australians over $4 billion annually on their electricity bills. The top three areas in WA for rooftop solar uptake are Mandurah with 19,200 rooftop solar systems, Armadale with 16,700, and Ashby with 16,700.

Both the state government's residential battery scheme and the federal government's cheaper home batteries program are set to kick off by July 1, aiming to further promote the adoption of household battery technology.
