WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Donald Trump's administration said Monday it was sending 700 US Marines and thousands more National Guard troops to Los Angeles, sparking a furious response from California's governor over the 'deranged' deployment.

President Donald Trump's administration announced the deployment of 700 US Marines and additional National Guard troops to Los Angeles, causing a backlash from California's governor over the unusual move.

Over the weekend, 2,000 National Guard members were already sent to the city, with 300 stationed to protect federal buildings. The recent mobilization of Marines and more National Guard troops came amid ongoing protests against immigration raids.

A senior administration official revealed that 700 active-duty US Marines from Camp Pendleton would be deployed to assist in protecting federal agents and buildings. This deployment of military personnel within the US is a rare occurrence.

The US military confirmed the deployment of approximately 700 Marines from an infantry battalion to work alongside the National Guard forces previously deployed by Trump without the approval of California's Governor Gavin Newsom.

Additionally, an extra 2,000 California National Guard troops were called into federal service to support ICE and aid federal law enforcement officers in carrying out their duties.

Newsom criticized Trump for causing chaos by sending soldiers to American soil, calling the decision to deploy Marines "deranged" and "dictatorial."
