A former ranger from NSW National Parks has joined the opposition against the state's plan to increase prices for campgrounds, particularly affecting families. Louise Andersen, who recently left the Parks service, is worried that the proposed changes could lead to a 'disconnection from nature' for many Australians who may not be able to afford the new fees.
While the public consultation period for the changes has ended, adventurer Mike Atkinson has started a petition urging the government to reconsider the pricing plan. The petition has garnered over 10,200 signatures so far.
Louise Andersen, who remains passionate about promoting Australia's natural beauty, believes that the fee hikes could impact visitor experience and attitudes towards the parks. The proposed changes include pegging prices to inflation, introducing seasonal variations, and categorizing sites into different tiers based on facilities.
In a recent podcast, Louise raised concerns that the increased fees may discourage families from camping locally, with some opting for overseas holidays instead. The petition against the price hikes has gained support from Environment Minister Penny Sharpe and Nationals MP Scott Barrett, who emphasize the importance of keeping national parks accessible to all.
The petition will remain open for signatures until August 21, with hopes of sparking a debate in parliament to address the concerns raised by the public.
