The Chenab Bridge, known as the world's highest railway-arch bridge, has captured the attention of not only those on the ground but also passengers flying over the picturesque valleys of Srinagar. Inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 6, this engineering wonder has become a sight to behold for many.
Flight pilots have started making announcements as they soar over the Chenab Bridge, prompting passengers to eagerly snap photos of the magnificent structure. As planes approach the Chenab valley, pilots inform passengers, 'Below you is the world's tallest railway-arch bridge, the Chenab Bridge.' Dilip Kumar, Executive Director of Information and Publicity at the Railway Board, described the bridge as a source of pride that resonates from the ground to the skies.
On the ground, the Chenab Bridge has also become a popular spot for locals from nearby villages and hilly areas. Visitors are flocking to the site to capture the stunning structure from different angles and share live videos on social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook, spreading the excitement nationwide.
Passengers onboard flights express their admiration for the Indian engineering marvel, with many clapping, smiling, and sharing words of praise. The Chenab Bridge is a key component of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, towering 359 meters above the Chenab River, making it the tallest railway bridge globally. The bridge spans 1,315 meters in total, with the primary steel arch measuring 467 meters, designed to withstand winds of up to 266 kilometers per hour.
Standing 35 meters higher than the Eiffel Tower and nearly five times taller than the Qutub Minar, the Chenab Bridge is a testament to Indian engineering prowess. The Indian Railways utilized a state-of-the-art cable-crane system for the first time in history, featuring two massive cable cars and pylons over 100 meters tall to bridge the 915-meter-wide gap.
