Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, announced a proposal meant to ramp up pressure on Moscow.

The European Union's executive branch has introduced a fresh set of sanctions against Russia with the goal of increasing pressure on President Vladimir V. Putin by targeting the country's energy and banking sectors.

These sanctions, announced by Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, are still subject to debate and approval by member states. The proposed measures include a ban on transactions involving the Nord Stream pipelines in an effort to disrupt the flow of energy from Russia to Europe.

Additionally, the proposal aims to reduce the price cap for Russian gas on the global market, ultimately impacting Russian revenues. The sanctions would also impact Russian banks and the 'shadow fleet,' a group of older tanker ships that Russia uses to clandestinely transport and sell oil worldwide to evade energy sanctions. The new measures would specifically target a group of ships currently involved in these activities.
