Foreign Minister Penny Wong says Australia has joined the UK, Canada and New Zealand in sanctioning Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich over comments they have made about Gaza.

Australia, along with the UK, Canada, New Zealand, and Norway, has imposed sanctions on two Israeli government officials, Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich, for allegedly inciting violence against Palestinians in the West Bank. The sanctions include travel bans and asset freezes for the individuals.

Foreign Minister Penny Wong condemned the ministers for promoting extremist violence and human rights abuses against Palestinians. She emphasized that such actions are unacceptable and dangerous, despite ongoing engagement with the Israeli government on the matter.

Ben-Gvir serves as the National Security Minister, while Smotrich is the Finance Minister in the Israeli government. Senator Wong clarified that the sanctions are not a shift from Australia's support for Israel's security, especially following recent attacks by Hamas.

The measures are targeted at individuals undermining Israel's security and global reputation, according to Wong. She reiterated Australia's desire for a strong friendship with Israel based on shared values and security commitments.

The sanctions are specifically related to the ministers' conduct in the West Bank but are also influenced by the situation in Gaza. Wong expressed concern over the suffering of civilians in Gaza and emphasized the need to prevent unlawful transfers of Palestinians.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar criticized the sanctions, calling them outrageous and stating that the government will discuss its response. Ben-Gvir and Smotrich are known for advocating the expansion of settlements in the West Bank and supporting ongoing conflicts in Gaza.

The ministers have faced backlash for their controversial statements and actions, including calls for the displacement of Palestinians and the establishment of new settlements. They have also been involved in nationalist marches and incited tensions in Jerusalem.

In response to the sanctions, Ben-Gvir and Smotrich criticized the UK government, vowing to continue their work for Israel and its people. The UK, along with other countries, has increased criticism of Israel's policies, particularly regarding Gaza.
