Opposition Vows to Fight Rental Changes Amid Concerns Over No-Fault Eviction Ban Exclusions

Opposition parties today pledged to fight the new Government proposals on rents "at every opportunity”.

Opposition parties have strongly opposed the new Government proposals on rents, vowing to challenge them at every opportunity. Rory Hearne from the Social Democrats expressed concerns that the no-fault eviction ban will not cover half of all tenancies, potentially leading to increased rental costs and evictions. He criticized the measures for favoring landlords and creating loopholes that could harm renting families.

Labour's housing spokesperson, Conor Sheehan, also criticized the proposals, stating that renters have been left vulnerable and questioning the definition of 'small landlords.' Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald warned that students would be among the most affected by the changes, which she believes will benefit corporate landlords at the expense of tenants.

The Taoiseach defended the reforms, emphasizing the need to incentivize new investment in housing. He highlighted the extension of Rent Pressure Zones (RPZs) across the country and stronger security of tenure protections for renters. The opposition, however, remains skeptical of the changes, expressing concerns about potential rent increases and loopholes in the system.

The new national rent control system aims to cover every tenancy in the country and introduce caps linked to inflation for newly built homes. Landlords will be categorized based on the number of properties they own, with smaller landlords facing restrictions on rent resets. The opposition has criticized the government's approach, calling for more robust measures to protect tenants and control rent prices.
