Recently, the United Kingdom has imposed sanctions on two Israeli government ministers, Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich. Mr. Ben-Gvir, serving as the security minister, and Mr. Smotrich, as the finance minister in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's coalition government, will both face a travel ban and have their assets frozen.
This decision comes as part of the efforts by the UK and other Western nations to increase pressure on Israel's government in light of the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Israel's foreign affairs minister Gideon Sa'ar condemned the sanctions, stating that it is unacceptable for elected representatives and government officials to be targeted in this manner.
Both Mr. Smotrich and Mr. Ben-Gvir are members of right-wing parties that support Prime Minister Netanyahu's fragile coalition government. They have faced criticism for their hardline approach to the situation in Gaza. Mr. Smotrich has actively campaigned against providing aid to Gaza, while Mr. Ben-Gvir has advocated for the resettlement of Gaza's population.
