The United Kingdom has imposed sanctions on two Israeli far-right ministers, Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich, over their comments regarding Gaza. The sanctions include a travel ban and freezing of any assets in the UK, as announced by the foreign secretary. The UK condemned the ministers for inciting extremist violence and human rights abuses against Palestinians.
Following the announcement, Finance Minister Smotrich and National Security Minister Ben-Gvir expressed outrage at the measures, stating that it is unacceptable for elected representatives to face such actions. In response, Israel criticized the decision, calling it unwarranted.
Foreign Minister Gideon Saar of Israel stated that the cabinet would convene to address what he deemed an unacceptable decision by the UK. This move by the UK aligns with efforts by Western nations to increase pressure on Israel's government amidst the conflict in Gaza.
The Foreign Office emphasized the need for Israel to adhere to International Humanitarian Law and cease violence and intimidation by Israeli settlers against Palestinian communities in the West Bank. Both Smotrich and Ben-Gvir are members of right-wing parties supporting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's coalition government and have faced criticism for their positions on the Gaza conflict.
Smotrich has opposed aid to Gaza, while Ben-Gvir has advocated for the resettlement of Gazans from the territory. Despite the sanctions, Smotrich remains determined to continue building settlements, expressing defiance towards the UK's actions.
