At the Canadian swimming trials, 18-year-old Summer McIntosh achieved her second world record in three days by surpassing Hungarian legend Katinka Hosszu's 200m individual medley mark from a decade ago.
McIntosh, a three-time Olympic champion, set a new record of two minutes, 05.70 seconds in the 200m individual medley, shaving off 0.42 seconds from Hosszu's time at the 2015 world championships in Kazan. Reflecting on her achievement, McIntosh expressed how this record had been on her mind since the trials two years ago and how she had been steadily working towards it. Winning Olympic gold in the 200m butterfly, 200m freestyle, and 400m individual medley at the Paris Games, McIntosh described the satisfaction of finally achieving this milestone.
Aside from her recent record-breaking performance, McIntosh also swam the third-fastest women's 800m freestyle in history the day before. She sees her success in the 200m individual medley as a confidence boost for the upcoming world championships in Singapore, emphasizing the importance of executing the race perfectly due to its sprint-like nature and lack of room for errors. McIntosh, who currently holds the 400m individual medley world record, is pleased with her performance and is optimistic about her prospects in Singapore.
