Hyderabad has recently reported 10 new Covid-19 cases along with a surge in seasonal influenza, characterized by mild symptoms. The XFG Omicron sub-variant is spreading in Telangana and other states, but health experts are advising calm as the number of cases remains manageable, emphasizing the importance of taking precautions.

Hyderabad Reports New Covid Cases and Seasonal Influenza

Hyderabad, along with other districts in Telangana, has seen a steady increase in Covid-19 and seasonal influenza cases over the past week. Although the symptoms are mild, private healthcare facilities in Hyderabad are noting a rise in Covid infections. The Department of Public Health (DPH) in Telangana has confirmed 10 new Covid-positive cases in the last seven weeks.

A senior pediatric specialist from a private hospital chain mentioned, "I have come across nine Covid-positive cases in the last 48 hours from three different families. All these cases are being treated in the outpatient department, including two infants. The symptoms are quite mild, resembling a mild flu and, in some cases, even milder than a severe flu."

Surge in XFG Omicron Sub-Variant

Despite the overall rise in cases, the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG) has reported around 163 cases of a new XFG variant. This Omicron sub-variant has been detected in various states such as Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and Gujarat. The XFG variant is known for its ability to evade immunity, facilitating its spread. Dr. M. Kiran, a critical care and public health specialist at Gandhi Hospital, reassured the public that although cases are being reported, the symptoms are not severe, urging people not to panic.

Spike in Viral Fevers and Influenza

In addition to Covid infections, private and government hospitals are observing a surge in viral fevers and influenza in their outpatient departments. Hospitals like Fever Hospital, Osmania General Hospital, and Gandhi Hospital have started noticing a slight increase in cases, which is anticipated to rise further due to fluctuating temperatures.

Common Covid Symptoms and Precautions

  • Mild fever or absence of fever
  • Extended fever at times
  • Feeling fatigued, lethargic, and experiencing body aches
  • Headaches or sinus pressure
  • Laryngitis or throat irritation
  • Nasal congestion or a runny nose
  • Persistent sore throat
  • Nausea, vomiting, or loose stools

Precautionary measures include avoiding contact with sick individuals, frequent use of hand sanitizers, covering the mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing, and wearing masks if feeling unwell. Most cases are mild, and individuals are recovering well, although those with underlying health conditions should be extra vigilant.
