During a recent raid in Binondo, Manila, the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) confiscated fake mosquito repellent coils valued at over P100,000.
Brig. Gen. Rolindo M Suguilon, the officer-in-charge of CIDG, revealed that the operation led to the arrest of three Chinese and five Filipino individuals. The raid was conducted based on intelligence reports indicating illegal activities within Barangay 281 in Binondo.
The suspects were apprehended for allegedly selling counterfeit mosquito repellent coils, a violation of Section 155 of Republic Act No. 8293, also known as the Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines.
Authorities seized 120 boxes of 'Wawang' black mosquito repellent incense during the operation, with an estimated worth of P109,200. The effectiveness of the seized products compared to the genuine ones remains uncertain.
Despite the quality concerns, Brig. Gen. Suguilon highlighted the importance of protecting the intellectual property rights of creators and innovators. He emphasized the CIDG's dedication to upholding the law and pursuing individuals who infringe on these rights.
Suguilon stated, 'This operation demonstrates our commitment to law enforcement and deterring criminal activities. By apprehending the suspects, we have successfully prevented further violations of the law.'
