The Malaysian Ministry of Health has reassured the public that the newly discovered COVID-19 subvariant JN.1 is not a major threat and there is no need for panic. Despite an increase in community cases, the weekly average remains below the national alert level, with no reported deaths related to this subvariant.
According to the ministry, JN.1 is considered less severe compared to earlier strains of the virus. The current situation aligns with the transitional phase of coexisting with COVID-19, with infections being managed effectively by maintaining good immunity levels.
Individuals in high-risk categories are advised to consider getting a COVID-19 booster shot to lower the chances of infection, severe illness, or death. This recommendation particularly applies to unvaccinated individuals aged 18 and above, adolescents with underlying health conditions, immunocompromised persons, pregnant women, and frontline healthcare workers.
COVID-19 vaccination remains voluntary and is offered free of charge at selected government health facilities nationwide. Eligible individuals can schedule appointments through the MySejahtera app.
