Following the tragic stampede at Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium during RCB's IPL victory celebrations, the BCCI is set to discuss standard guidelines for such events in its upcoming Apex Council meeting. Despite this, there are no plans to ban IPL-2025 champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru or impose any penalties, according to a reliable source within the Board.
The BCCI will convene its 'Emergent' Apex Council Meeting on June 14 to address the formulation of standard guidelines for IPL victory celebrations in light of the recent stampede in Bengaluru. The meeting, scheduled for 4 pm, will take place virtually.
The tragic incident occurred on June 4 following RCB's victory after an 18-year wait, drawing nearly 2.5 lakh fans to the stadium and its surroundings to witness stars like Virat Kohli in action. The resulting stampede claimed 11 lives and left 56 others injured.
According to the BCCI source, the focus of the meeting will be on preventing such tragedies in the future and implementing necessary steps to enhance safety measures. While the discussion will include the need for norms surrounding IPL victory celebrations, there is no intention to penalize RCB or the franchise for the incident. The aim is to engage in constructive dialogue on improving the management of such celebrations, as the RCB event took place without prior notification to the BCCI.
Additionally, it has been reported that New Zealand is scheduled to tour India from January 11-31, 2026, for a white-ball series featuring three ODIs and five T20Is.
Other topics on the agenda for the Apex Council meeting include the 'BCCI Code of Conduct for Players and Team Officials' introduced post India's challenging tour of Australia. The council will also review the 'AVP' (Age Verification Programme) aimed at preventing age-fudging in age-group cricket, particularly in the Under-16 boys and Under-15 girls categories.
Furthermore, a complaint lodged in April 2025 by Karimnagar District Cricket Association president V Agam Rao regarding alleged irregularities in fund utilization for cricket infrastructure development in Telangana districts will be addressed. BCCI Ombudsman Justice Arun Mishra has instructed the Apex Council to take appropriate action in response to the complaint.
