Today, Wales is bracing for heavy rain and thunderstorms, with up to 40mm of rainfall expected in some areas. The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning, predicting disruptions across the country.
Weather maps indicate that by midday, more than 35mm of rain will have fallen in Wales, with the heaviest rainfall forecasted for mid to west Wales. Areas like Pembrokeshire, Swansea, Carmarthenshire, Aberystwyth, and the north-west are expected to receive 40mm of rain starting from 10.30am.
Heavy rainfall is expected to cover most of the country, with thunderstorms and lightning strikes possible. South Wales will experience the heaviest rainfall from 9am, with a brief break in Pembrokeshire by 9.30am before Swansea gets hit with 40mm of rain.
By 10am, the rainfall will be less severe but will shift back towards Pembrokeshire, with Llandovery experiencing the worst of it. Throughout the morning, rainfall will move towards the middle and south of the country, covering most areas by midday. North Wales will see up to 40mm of rainfall by midday.
As the day progresses, the rain will move northwards, clearing in the south-east by 1pm and arriving in the north. Severe rainfall will persist in west Wales, with heavy rain returning to the north by 3pm and lasting until 8pm. In the evening, patches of severe rainfall are expected in Swansea, Cardiff, and Newport.
Met Office Chief Meteorologist Neil Armstrong warns of heavy rain and thunderstorms moving through Wales and parts of southwest England, as well as Northern Ireland. There is a risk of disruption due to 40mm of rain falling in a short period. Thunderstorms with hail and lightning are expected in England and Wales, with temperatures remaining high. Further rain is anticipated on Friday, with a yellow thunderstorm warning issued for parts of the South East and East Anglia from Friday afternoon to Saturday morning.
