During a recent incident, Ali Elmoubayed, an alleged key figure in the infamous Alameddine crime network, narrowly missed a shooting at his home. Elmoubayed, a former bodyguard to Rafat Alameddine, was on his way to court when his residence was targeted by gunfire on Thursday morning.
Elmoubayed, who has reportedly taken over the local operations of the crime network since Alameddine fled to Lebanon in 2022, was unaware of the shooting until he was stopped by a highway patrol car along with his lawyer, Jaad Krayem. Despite being approached by the Herald for comments on the incident, Elmoubayed chose to remain silent.
Earlier in April, Elmoubayed was granted strict bail on numerous charges, including drug-related offenses, kidnapping, and leading a criminal group. Magistrate Cate Follent recently approved Elmoubayed's request to move to a high-rise building in Sydney, despite concerns raised by prosecutors about the presence of other organized crime members in the same building.
Elmoubayed's lawyer argued that the added security features of the new building would provide better protection for Elmoubayed, his family, including his pregnant wife and three children. The move was motivated by safety concerns following several threats on Elmoubayed's life, including the recent shooting at his Merrylands residence.
Taskforce Falcon, established to investigate underworld-related crimes, has been closely monitoring the recent surge in gangland shootings. Elmoubayed's case is just one of the many incidents under the task force's scrutiny, following a series of violent events involving organized crime networks.
Despite ongoing internal conflicts within criminal networks, Taskforce commander Jason Box assured the public that efforts were being made to suppress the violence and apprehend those responsible for the shootings. The recent attacks have raised concerns about potential future assaults in the underworld, prompting figures like Elmoubayed to take precautionary measures to avoid being targeted.
Following the courtroom proceedings, where one of Elmoubayed's associates was granted bail despite the risk of fleeing the country, Elmoubayed was seen smiling and embracing his companions, reflecting the tense atmosphere surrounding the ongoing investigations.
