The Congress party expressed concerns on 12 June about the United States' recent actions that seem to align India and Pakistan closely together.
The opposition party urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to set aside his reluctance and convene an all-party meeting and a special session of Parliament to discuss India-Pakistan relations, especially following Operation Sindoor.
Congress's general secretary and communications head, Jairam Ramesh, emphasized that decades of diplomatic progress should not be undermined so easily.
Ramesh mentioned that Pakistani Army Chief General Asim Munir has been invited to an event in Washington DC on US Army Day, which he described as a significant diplomatic and strategic setback for India.
He raised concerns about General Munir's past provocative statements and questioned the intentions behind the US invitation.
A Serious Concern
Ramesh also highlighted recent remarks by the head of the US Central Command, praising Pakistan as a valuable partner in the fight against terrorism.
Given the ongoing Operation Sindoor, Ramesh deemed the Pakistani army chief's participation in the US Army Day event a matter of serious concern.
The Congress leader criticized the Modi government for allowing such diplomatic setbacks and called for a united national approach through an all-party meeting and a special parliamentary session.
US-Pakistan Relations
Referring to US Army General Michael Kurilla's positive comments about Pakistan's counterterrorism efforts, the Congress questioned PM Modi's stance on this and labeled it as a diplomatic setback.
The opposition party also pointed out statements from the Trump administration suggesting a potential shift in US-India-Pakistan relations, urging Modi to clarify the situation.
Ramesh cited reports of Pakistan's Chief of Army Staff General Syed Asim Munir planning to visit Washington, DC, for the US Army Day celebrations, which he viewed as another blow to India's diplomatic standing.
General Kurilla's recent testimony before the US House Armed Services Committee emphasized the importance of maintaining relationships with both Pakistan and India, highlighting Pakistan's role as a crucial counterterrorism partner.
These developments come in the aftermath of Operation Sindoor, launched by the Indian Armed Forces in response to the Pahalgam terror attack, signaling a complex diplomatic landscape for India.
