Hearing about a knife incident in the school’s area ‘felt like American news’, says parent

A mother has chosen to temporarily remove her son from a school in Dublin 8 due to nearby anti-immigration demonstrations and a recent 'knife incident' in the area.

Andreea-Claudia Calin took her 8-year-old son out of Canal Way Educate Together School after protesters gathered near the school gates with Tricolours and graffiti stating 'Dublin 8 Says No'.

An International Protection Accommodation Service center has been operating near the school since 2022, with plans to expand it recently dropped by the Department of Justice.

Ms. Calin, originally from Romania and raised in Greece, has been living in Ireland since 2018 with her partner and two children.

She was informed by the school about a 'knife incident' involving a foreign national and a teenage boy near a different primary school in the area.

Gardaí confirmed attending the scene of an alleged assault and public order incident on May 28th.

Ms. Calin expressed her concern, stating that the incident 'felt like American news' and that she felt it was unsafe for her son to attend school.

She decided to homeschool her son and notified the school's teacher and principal of her decision.

The school's board of management expressed sadness over the situation and mentioned that they are monitoring the impact of the protests on the school community.

Efforts to request a different approach from the protesters have been unsuccessful so far.

The board has informed relevant authorities seeking a resolution to the situation.
