Vice President Sara Duterte emphasized the significance of 'true unity' in achieving freedom during a speech commemorating the 127th anniversary of Philippine independence. She celebrated Independence Day with Filipinos in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

In her address to her compatriots, Duterte highlighted that freedom can only be realized through genuine unity, which provides strength, determination, and courage.

Unity was a central theme in her and President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s 2022 campaign, known as the 'UniTeam,' although their partnership has since deteriorated.

Duterte hinted at the challenges to unity, pointing out that some interests may conflict with those of the Filipino people. She alluded to her former ally, whose actions have revealed their true intentions and may lead to suffering through violence and abuse of power.

Specifically mentioning her father, former President Rodrigo Duterte, Duterte referenced his surrender to the International Criminal Court in March to face allegations of crimes against humanity related to his anti-drug campaign, which resulted in thousands of deaths.

In a video message earlier on Independence Day, Duterte urged Filipinos not to give up their freedom to traitors. She departed for Malaysia for personal reasons, as announced by her office last Tuesday.
