A doctor has shared the major 'red flags' to watch out for as they could be a sign of cancer

A doctor has highlighted several 'red flag' symptoms that could indicate the presence of cancer, including blocked ears. These symptoms are often overlooked, but early detection is crucial for better outcomes.

Head and neck cancers, affecting areas like the mouth, throat, and nose, are on the rise. Nearly 13,000 people in the UK are diagnosed with these cancers annually, with incidence rates increasing by a third since the 1990s.

Experts attribute this rise to factors like human papillomavirus (HPV), which can be asymptomatic but trigger the disease. Dr. Jiri Kubes, an oncologist at the Proton Therapy Center in Prague, shared common signs to raise awareness.

Dr. Kubes emphasized the importance of early diagnosis, stating that head and neck cancer is one of the fastest-growing types globally, yet awareness remains low.

Red Flag Symptoms to Watch Out For:

  • Persistently blocked ears: This sensation is likened to post-swimming pool diving discomfort. Persistent earache can also be a potential indicator of cancer in that area.
  • Swelling in the neck: Resistance when touching a part of the neck could signal an issue.
  • Sore gums and ulcers: Dr. Kubes advised not ignoring ulcers, as they could be cancerous lesions. Tooth pain and white or red patches in the mouth are also warning signs.
