India’s Diabetes Crisis: Over 5 Crore Undiagnosed Amid Rising Cases, Experts Warn

India is facing a significant diabetes crisis, with an alarming 11.4 per cent prevalence of the condition. Currently, more than 10 crore people in the country are living with diabetes, but experts warn that over 5 crore individuals remain undiagnosed. Consultant Endocrinologist Dr. Krishna Reddy Thaduri from KIMS Hospitals in Kondapur emphasized the importance of increased awareness and routine blood sugar testing, particularly among high-risk groups, during National Diabetes Week.

Diabetes occurs when the body struggles to metabolize carbohydrates due to insulin insufficiency or resistance, leading to elevated blood sugar levels and severe complications like heart attacks, strokes, kidney failure, and neuropathy. While type 2 diabetes makes up over 90 per cent of cases, other forms such as type 1 and gestational diabetes also present risks.

Dr. Thaduri highlighted that symptoms of diabetes can often be vague, underscoring the importance of early screening to prevent disease progression. He recommended lifestyle changes such as regular moderate exercise, dietary modifications focusing on increased protein and fiber intake, weight management, adequate sleep, stress reduction, and cessation of smoking. For individuals already diagnosed with diabetes, it is crucial to have regular medical check-ups and maintain HbA1c levels below 7 per cent to minimize complications.

With India's national average HbA1c level currently at 9.1 per cent, Dr. Thaduri stressed the need for enhanced efforts to accurately measure, monitor, and manage diabetes to combat this escalating health crisis.
