An Air India flight carrying 242 passengers crashed near Ahmedabad Airport, with at least 120 people feared dead. The London-bound Flight AI 171 crashed shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, plunging into a residential area. Social media images showed dark smoke rising from the crash site.

Out of the passengers, 169 were Indian, 53 were British, seven were Portuguese, and one was Canadian. Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani is believed to have been on board the flight to London.

Prime Minister Modi has been briefed on the incident and has directed rescue and relief efforts. Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu and Home Minister Amit Shah are en route to Ahmedabad to assess the situation.
