Since its birth as a nation, Singapore has been a close partner of Israel. But the "special relationship" has been strained by the war in Gaza and its toll on Palestinian civilians.

Gilbert Goh, a Singaporean humanitarian, drew inspiration from his childhood as a foster child to assist displaced children. While working with Palestinian and Syrian refugees in Lebanon, he witnessed the impact of the conflict in Gaza, which led to the establishment of a clinic to aid Palestinian civilians.

Following the attack by Hamas-led militants on southern Israel, Israel invaded Gaza, resulting in a war that claimed over 55,000 lives and left 90% of schools in Gaza partially or fully destroyed. Shaker Al-Durra, a school principal in Gaza, transformed into an aid worker to support children's education amidst the destruction.

With the help of international donors, learning centers in Gaza have continued to provide education to around 1,600 children. Love Aid Singapore, founded by Mr. Goh, raised over .3 million from ordinary Singaporeans to support humanitarian efforts in Gaza, including the establishment of soup kitchens and a polyclinic.

While the Singaporean government has provided over $22 million in aid to Gaza, it recently criticized Israel's actions, stating that Israel's response to the conflict has led to a severe humanitarian crisis. This shift in rhetoric marks a departure from Singapore's historically close relationship with Israel.

Over the years, Israel and Singapore have maintained a discreet military cooperation, with Israel providing guidance to Singapore on various matters. Despite this, Singapore has consistently voted against Israel at the UN General Assembly and has called for an end to the occupation of Gaza, East Jerusalem, and the West Bank.

In light of the escalating conflict and humanitarian crisis in Gaza, Singaporean authorities have closely monitored Mr. Goh's activities to ensure compliance with regulations. However, Mr. Goh remains committed to providing aid to Gaza and believes that Singaporeans can make a significant impact in the humanitarian field.

Despite the challenges, Mr. Goh remains hopeful for the future, emphasizing the importance of providing hope and normalcy to displaced Palestinians in Gaza. He believes that Singapore's generosity and focus can bring about positive change in the humanitarian world.
