The Department of Energy (DOE) has commissioned the National Transmission Corporation (TransCo) to revamp the power transmission infrastructure in Siquijor in response to the persistent power crisis on the island.
During a press conference in Taguig City, DOE Assistant Secretary Mario Marasigan emphasized the need to reconfigure the connection and ensure that all generation facilities are interconnected to support each other during outages.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. recently visited a power plant operated by Siquijor Island Power Corporation (SIPCOR) in Barangay Candanay Sur following the declaration of a state of calamity due to the power shortage.
President Marcos instructed the provincial government of Siquijor to address the power situation within six months.
The power crisis in Siquijor, which was attributed to supply issues, prompted incoming DOE officer-in-charge Undersecretary Sharon Garin to highlight the importance of resolving the generation facility challenges.
Marasigan revealed that only five out of SIPCOR's nine generation facilities are currently operational, prompting the government to take action to ensure uninterrupted power supply on the island.
SIPCOR is implementing corrective measures to address the power supply issues in Siquijor, with the government providing support to meet the energy demands of the province.
