Police were called to the Watkin Path - regarded as a challenging route up the mountain.

Two women tragically lost their lives after being discovered in a pool at Wales' largest national park. The North Wales Police were alerted to Nant Gwynant, Gwynedd, at 21:31 BST on Wednesday in Eryri National Park, also known as Snowdonia. One woman was found in the pool on the Watkin Path, a popular route to the summit of Yr Wyddfa, the tallest mountain in Wales. The second woman was retrieved from the water but sadly pronounced dead at the scene, according to the police.

Det Ch Insp Andy Gibson expressed condolences to the families and friends of the deceased women. An investigation is currently ongoing, and any potential witnesses are encouraged to come forward. The emergency response included a mountain rescue team, police, air ambulance, and a coastguard helicopter.

County councillor June Jones described the incident as a "tragedy" and extended sympathies to the affected families. She highlighted the impact of social media in attracting people to such natural beauty spots and cautioned about the cold water in these areas. Yr Wyddfa sees over 600,000 visitors annually, with the summit being particularly crowded during the summer months. Standing at 1,085m (3,559ft), it is not only the highest mountain in Wales but also the busiest in the UK.
