Malaysia has confirmed its participation in the upcoming United Nations (UN) conference in New York next week, focusing on discussions about a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine, according to Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the Prime Minister.
He expressed Malaysia's support for the initiative led by France and Saudi Arabia to convene the conference, emphasizing the importance of countries voicing their opinions on justice for Palestine and Gaza.
During a press conference after Friday prayers at Masjid Azzubair Ibnul Awwam in Cheras, Anwar commended the efforts of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of Saudi Arabia and French President Emmanuel Macron in organizing the event.
Responding to reports of a warning from the US administration under President Donald Trump against attending the UN conference, Anwar reiterated Malaysia's stance on the matter.
He mentioned that any country has the right to participate and express their views, despite potential diplomatic repercussions from the US for taking a stance against Israel.
Although the United States rejects unilateral recognition of the State of Palestine, Malaysia remains committed to supporting justice for Palestine and Gaza.
When asked if he would personally attend the conference scheduled from June 17 to 20, Anwar indicated that he is unlikely to be present.
France and Saudi Arabia are leading the organization of the conference, with Paris considering the possibility of unilateral recognition of Palestine.
