Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson commended the resilience of the people in the province on Independence Day in light of the ongoing threat posed by the Kanlaon Volcano eruption that has impacted thousands of residents since June 3, 2024.

Reflecting on the past year since the initial eruption, Gov. Lacson expressed gratitude towards the frontline workers and modern heroes who have played a crucial role in responding to the crisis.

The eruption of Kanlaon, which began a year ago, served as a poignant reminder of the strength and fortitude of the community in the face of adversity.

Thousands of residents across three local government units in Negros Occidental have been affected by the volcanic activities, prompting continuous assistance to address the needs of evacuees as the threat of a major eruption lingers.

After more than a year of residing in evacuation centers, some Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) have started returning to their homes with hopes of rebuilding their lives outside of temporary shelters.

Gov. Lacson extended his appreciation to first responders, healthcare workers, volunteers, public servants, and ordinary citizens who have risen to the occasion during these challenging times, noting that their spirit mirrors that of the heroes who paved the way for independence.

As Negros Occidental commemorated its 127th Independence Day, Gov. Lacson reiterated the collective commitment to honor the past, safeguard freedom, and strive for a future marked by prosperity and peace for all Filipinos.

He emphasized the importance of recognizing the sacrifices made by past generations in securing freedom and democracy, urging everyone to uphold the principles of democracy, equity, and justice.

Gov. Lacson underscored that while independence is celebrated annually, it is a daily responsibility to defend the values that underpin a democratic society.

He called on the current generation to continue the legacy of good governance, inclusive growth, environmental stewardship, and equal opportunities for all citizens, ensuring that the vision of a prosperous and equitable Philippines is realized.

As the nation reflects on its history, freedom, and future, Gov. Lacson emphasized the enduring connection between the past, present, and future, symbolized by the themes of Kasaysayan, Kalayaan, and Kinabukasan.

In Bacolod City, Mayor-elect Greg Gasataya led the city government in commemorating Independence Day at the city public plaza, highlighting the importance of honoring the sacrifices made by the country's leaders for the sake of freedom.
