Singapore's Chinese Community Liaison Group (CCLG) under the leadership of National Development Minister Chee Hong Tat is prioritizing the integration of new immigrants to promote social cohesion. The approach is to expand the common space rather than expecting immigrants to assimilate.
Mr. Chee emphasized that integration is not about reducing but enhancing and adding to the existing culture. He highlighted the evolving nature of Singaporean identity and the benefits of absorbing positive elements from new immigrants.
During a meeting with clan leaders at the Singapore Federation of Chinese Clan Associations (SFCCA), Mr. Chee used the example of Singapore's food scene to illustrate how new immigrant contributions enrich the local culture without replacing traditional favorites.
He emphasized the importance of maintaining a strong sense of identity while integrating new elements to strengthen the overall sense of belonging and common space. Mr. Chee also acknowledged the role of immigration in addressing Singapore's ageing population.
Mr. Chee explained that Singapore's approach to integration allows each community to preserve its unique heritage, traditions, language, and food while appreciating and sharing in the diversity of cultures within the country.
