Drivers are facing significant delays on the M62 today after a lorry collision resulted in the closure of the motorway in both directions near Warrington. The crash led to a fuel spillage, causing a major clean-up operation.
The incident occurred when a lorry struck a barrier on the A49 Winwick Road, which sits above the M62, leading to fuel leaking onto the motorway below. National Highways has reported a substantial diesel spillage at junction nine in Winwick as a consequence of the accident.
Motorists are advised to anticipate delays of up to 45 minutes when approaching the scene from either direction this morning. Cheshire Police confirmed that the M62 has been shut in both directions following the collision, with a diversion in place over the junction. The closure is expected to remain in effect for several hours, and drivers are urged to find alternative routes. Fortunately, there have been no reports of any injuries resulting from the incident.
National Highways contractors are currently on-site working to clear the diesel spillage on the carriageway, with traffic being redirected via the entry and exit slip roads. Inrix reported severe delays on the M62 in both directions due to the accident, with congestion stretching back to J7 heading eastbound and J10 heading westbound. The roundabout above the motorway's eastern side is blocked due to the collision, causing fuel to leak onto the M62 below.
This is an ongoing situation, and updates will be provided as they become available.
