A regional circus school will expand into Melbourne to offer more opportunities for performers across the country.

A regional circus school is set to expand into Melbourne, offering new opportunities for performers nationwide.

Following a tender process, the Albury-based Flying Fruit Fly Circus has secured the head tenancy of a Victorian government-owned creative space in Collingwood Yards. The space, to be known as Circus Centre Melbourne, will feature two large spaces and multiple multi-purpose rooms for rehearsals and performances, with an expected opening in October.

Circus Oz, another tenant at the venue, will occupy a smaller area following new lease arrangements. Recruitment for Melbourne-based staff is currently in progress.

Clancy Rosewarne, an Albury circus performer, expressed excitement over the move, emphasizing the potential for young performers to learn physical theatre skills and benefit from increased space and networking opportunities.

Established in 1979, the Flying Fruit Fly Circus is the country's sole full-time circus school for primary and secondary students, renowned for producing exceptional graduates and acclaimed touring productions.

Chief executive Richard Hull highlighted the new space's potential to benefit the circus and physical theatre sector, emphasizing the collaborative efforts with various industry bodies to realize the center's vision.

Artistic director Anni Davey aims to attract performers globally, envisioning research, development, and innovative work in Melbourne as a hub for contemporary circus.

Creative Industries Minister Colin Brooks praised the initiative, describing the facility as 'world-class' and emphasizing the significant role of regional arts organizations in the state's creative landscape.

With funding from Creative Australia and the Victorian government, $2 million has been allocated over four years for the establishment and initial operational costs of Circus Centre Melbourne.

Performers Matilda Devine and Arabella Renwick, who honed their craft in Albury, anticipate the center's offerings, highlighting growth opportunities and the value of individuality in the arts industry.
