Minister P.A. Mohamed Riyas will be inaugurating a cutting-edge astronomy gallery at the Regional Science Centre and Planetarium in Kozhikode on June 14, 2025.
The gallery, costing around ₹1.5 crore, aims to educate and entertain people of all ages about the wonders of astronomy. It showcases fundamental discoveries in astronomy that have shaped human understanding over the years. Visitors will gain insights into various astronomical phenomena, from the possibility of life on other planets to the science behind stars, day, night, seasons, and galaxies.
More than just an exhibition, this interactive gallery offers a captivating learning experience through multimedia tools. It traces the evolution of astronomy from ancient times to the present day, providing visitors with a comprehensive view of the field.
Upon entering the gallery, visitors will encounter displays highlighting the contributions of ancient scholars like Aristotle, Ptolemy, Arya Bhatta, Bhaskara, and Copernicus. The exhibits include an animated model of the Grand Equatorial Sundial, a life-size statue of Galileo Galilei, models of the solar system, and 3D videos of celestial objects.
The gallery also features presentations on topics such as the Big-Bang Theory, gravity levels of planets, Multi-wavelength astronomy, Exoplanets, Astrobiology, and Einstein's Spacetime Curve. Scale models of the Hubble Space Telescope, its repair mission, and the James Webb Telescope are on display as well.
The inaugural event, scheduled for 10 a.m. on Saturday, will be presided over by Mayor Beena Philip.
